WHO criteria for dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever
Disease Plasma leakage* Circulatory failure Platelet count Haemorrhage† Dengue fever Absent Absent Variable Present or absent Dengue haemorrhagic fever serotype: I Present Absent <100 000 Absent II Present Absent <100 000 Present III‡ Present Pulse pressure <20 mm Hg or hypotension¶ <100 000 Present or absent IV‡ Present Blood pressure imperceptible <100 000 Present or absent *Shown by either fluctuation of packed cell volume ³ 20% during course of illness and recovery or clinical signs of plasma leakage, such as pleural effusion, ascites, or hypoproteinaemia.
†Haemorrhage present in addition to positive tourniquet test. Tourniquet test: inflate blood pressure cuff midway between systolic and diastolic pressure for 5 minutes; test positive if ³ 20 or more petechiae per square inch (6.25 cm2) present.
‡Dengue shock syndrome.
¶Systolic pressure <80 mm Hg for those aged less than 5 years or <90 mm Hg for those ³ 5 years.
