Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
Sir, I read the above article with interest. Many years ago I
remember reading about Piaget's categorization of psychological progress.
An example in that stated that a Frenchman wanted a costly drug to cure
his wife. He asked the pahrmacist to let him have it at cost price which
he could afford. The request was refused. He then asked him to loan him
the amount so he could procure the medicine for his wife. This was also
refused. He knew that the cost of the medicine was very little and that it
was being sold at an inflated price. So he broke into the pharmacy and
stole the medicine. He gave it to his wife who recovered. The question
posed was 'Did the man commit a crime?' Only less than 10 percent of the
respondents could rise to a level where they reasoned out that he had not
committed a crime in the eyes of a greater law whilst he may well have
broken the man made law. Greed is a dominant factor in society and needs
catering to, but to what extent?
