Steps for completing the American Board of Internal Medicine’s module for professional associate ratings and patient satisfaction questionnaires • The doctor (candidate) applies to the American Board of Internal Medicine to take the module
• The board sends the candidate instructions and the rating forms
• The candidate recruits 20 peer doctors to complete the professional associate ratings and 40 patients to complete the patient satisfaction questionnaires; each rater is given a copy of the questionnaire and a free telephone number to call
• Using a touch tone telephone, each rater dials the number and the automated system leads him or her through a series of questions that:
Identify the doctor being rated Gather ratings for each item on the questionnaire
Collect limited demographic information about the rater • The candidate can check the status of the completed professional associate ratings and patient satisfaction questionnaires throughout the process by calling a free telephone number and entering a doctor identification number
• When 10 professional associate ratings and 25 patient satisfaction questionnaires are completed the board aggregates the data and gives feedback to the candidate
• Based on the feedback, candidates devise a quality improvement plan and submit it to the board
• When all steps are completed, the candidate is given credit for the module
