India finalises tobacco control legislation

The Indian cabinet last week approved a long awaited tobacco control bill that will ban advertisements of tobacco products, outlaw smoking in public places, and deliver stronger health warnings to consumers.
The decision to introduce the bill into parliament during its budget session this month is being viewed as a signal that the government is finally moving to carry out longstanding pledges aimed at curbing the use of tobacco.
