    Twenty five years ago, while I was still a medical student at the University of Gdansk, Poland, I was involved in the preparations for a visit by Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of modern palliative care. Dame Cicely also went to the universities of Warsaw and Krakow and her visits resulted in an explosion of interest in palliative care in Poland and later in the whole of eastern Europe.
