Drug companies defend rewards to doctors for switching treatments

Pharmaceutical companies in the United States have criticised attempts by the government to restrict handouts and promotions to doctors.
Department of Health and Human Services guidelines issued last October warn drug manufacturers against payments or other encouragement, such as entertainment and travel, to doctors and health professionals to switch patients to their own products (BMJ 2002;325:795).
