High work stress doubles risk of cardiovascular death

Both high job strain and effort-reward imbalance increase cardiovascular mortality. In a 28 year prospective study of workers in Finland, Kivimäki and colleagues (p 857) found that work stress was associated with a doubling of the risk of cardiovascular death. High work stress also predicted increased cholesterol concentrations and body mass index at follow up. In promoting cardiovascular health, the traditional advice has been to stop smoking, cut down drinking, eat less fat, and engage in physical activity. These findings suggest that additional gains may be achieved from efforts to change work life.
