EU commissioner promises a European centre for disease control by 2005

    The European health commissioner, David Byrne, has promised to create a European centre for disease control by 2005, when his role as health commissioner comes to an end.

    Speaking at a press conference at the annual European health forum in Gastein, Austria, Byrne outlined plans for a centre bringing together expertise on epidemic control from around the European Union and coordinating European strategies against bioterrorism. The centre might also act as a contact point between health policy makers and the pharmaceutical industry.

    The European Commission will present enabling legislation in the spring. Byrne will then press EU law makers in the European parliament and the Council of Ministers to pass the legislation within 18 months or less, so that …
