Informed choice in screening

Primary prevention of coronary heart disease in groups at high risk depends on screening through primary care and provision of risk related advice or treatment. Criticisms of these recommendations highlight the lack of evidence for the cost effectiveness of multiple risk factor interventions. Marteau and Kinmonth argue on page 78 that this lack of evidence may reflect how people are invited for screening. They consider the implications of offering preventive services within a framework of informed choice.
