The male contraceptive pill could become a reality after some surprising findings from California. Molecular biologists at the Salk Institute in La Jolla have been studying cellular communication systems.
Dr Tony Hunter and his team have been investigating the ways cells respond when stem cell factor binds to kit/SCF-R, a tyrosine kinase receptor that sits across cell membranes.
“We already know that when stem cell factor binds to this particular receptor, signalling processes are triggered that result in the production of healthy red blood cells, melanocytes, and gametes,” said Dr Hunter.
